Collection: Cockpit
A road bike's cockpit components are the parts through which the rider holds the machine: handlebar, stem, integrated cockpit, bar tape, headset spacers and computer mounts. They are what determine the position on the bike, and therefore both long-term comfort and efficiency out of the saddle.
A cockpit is chosen first on three measurements: handlebar width, stem length and the height of the front end. A narrower handlebar closes up the position and cuts through the air better; a longer stem stretches the torso and loads the front. Spacers raise or lower the whole assembly a millimetre at a time — it is the cheapest and most effective adjustment for finding your position.
On recent bikes, the handlebar and stem are often a single piece, with the cables routed internally. This one-piece cockpit gains in aerodynamics and visual cleanliness, but it has to be chosen at the exact measurement: there is no longer any way to compensate between the two. The headset covers and spacers are then specific to the frame model.
Time trial and triathlon call for a front end of their own: aero extensions, risers and base bar aim for a position that can be held for a long time, arms resting, rather than a versatile support. The parts are adjusted in small increments, and a spacer of a few millimetres changes everything.
FAQ — The front end
| Topic | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Handlebar | Which handlebar width should I choose? | Width is measured centre to centre and is chosen close to shoulder width. Narrower gains in aerodynamics and closes up the position; wider opens the chest and stabilises the steering. A one-step difference (20 mm) is felt immediately. |
| Stem | How do I know if my stem is the right length? | Hands on the hoods, elbows slightly bent, the front hub should be roughly hidden by the handlebar. Too long pulls on the lower back and shoulders; too short makes the steering nervous and loads the rear. |
| Spacers | Can the height still be adjusted after cutting the steerer? | You can always go down, never go up beyond what the steerer allows. That is why you ride several outings with the spacers above the stem before cutting — and why an uncut steerer resells better. |
| Integrated cockpit | Is a one-piece cockpit compatible with all frames? | No. The internal cable routing and the headset cover are specific to the frame model. A cockpit is therefore chosen for a precise frame, with its own spacers and original cover. |
| Bar tape | How often should bar tape be changed? | As soon as it becomes shiny, tears or slips in the rain — generally once or twice a season with regular use. It is the cheapest wear part of the front end, and the one that changes the feel the most. |
| Computer mount | Why a dedicated mount rather than the original elastic band? | A mount fixed in front of the handlebar places the screen in the line of sight, frees up the gripping area and removes the vibrations that make the display unreadable. Combined models also take a camera or a light under the computer. |
| Compatibility | Which clamp diameter for a road handlebar? | The current standard is 31.8 mm at the clamping area, with a few aero handlebars in 35 mm. The stem and handlebar must share the same diameter: an adapter is not a lasting solution on a safety-critical part. |
